The Pros and Cons of Thermofoil and Wood

The Pros and Cons of Thermofoil and Wood When it comes to cabinet doors, folks do seem to have their preferences. There are those who live by real wood, where others are happy with special finishes. So many things have to be taken into consideration: location, lifestyle, use of cabinets and cost. Humidity affects wood cabinets and doors. You may need some sort of humidity control  if you live in climate where humidity fluctuates. In this situation, wood cabinets may not be the best choice. You could try thermofoil to get around the humidity issue. If you are not familiar with it, thermofoil is a type of high-quality finish used on cabinets.  It can give the look of wood, or a solid color when refacing cabinetry. It can even come in different textures and sheens. Wood, of course, has a natural look and feel to a room. It also comes in various textures and grains. It is still one of the favorite choices of cabinets. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of both wood and thermofoil.

Thermofoil

PROS: Thermofoil is pretty moisture-resistant, making it great for kitchens and bathrooms.  It is also can be less expensive than wood. You will find it much easier to clean. If you are looking for cabinets in particular, you will find a wide variety of thermofoil doors. These doors are good quality for an affordable price.. You will find the thermofoil to have a seamless look, very similar to wood. However, due to the movement of the wood contracting or expanding, a painted wood door will eventually show cracks. CONS: Thermofoil needs to be installed and cared for correctly. Unless there have been heat shields installed in the kitchen, or between any cabinet and heat source, thermofoil will not be heat-resistant in extreme temperatures. The glue can also become loose if not applied correctly. It has been noted the color of the thermofoil can change after long periods of time. It should be noted that many manufacturers have warranties on these doors, so if you have any of the above issues they can be solved quickly.

Wood

PROS: Wood is durable. It lasts for years if taken care of properly. It doesn’t peel. Wood cabinets allow for customization and homeowners can choose the type of wood used. The vast variety of wood ensures there is an affordable option for everyone. Even cheaper types of wood look good, and never go out of style. Wood cabinets can be painted or stained. CONS: Cabinets made of wood can be susceptible to moisture, bugs and physical damage. Wood can warp or crack. You may sometimes need to use wood moisturizer on your cabinets to keep them looking good. Wood also can be costly when heavy, solid hardwood is used. As with any kind of cabinet, white often makes the room feel bright and airy, where dark wood may make the room feel a bit smaller. In the end, the choice of cabinets is up to you. Choose what suits your lifestyle, tastes and location.
