Kitchen Solvers bullish as home remodeling and cabinet refacing market growth takes off

WoodworkingNetwork.com, which covers the carpentry and woodworking industries, recently highlighted Kitchen Solvers and its expectations for a remodeling boom, based on studies from a Harvard University research institute:

Kitchen remodeling businesses are poised for growth, says Kitchen Solvers, a national franchising company that specializes in kitchen cabinet and countertop refacing and remodeling.

Citing a Harvard study that pegs kitchen and bathroom remodeling at $75 billion a year, Kitchen Solvers President Gerry Henley says home remodeling spending will grow 5.9 percent in 2012 and 3.5 percent a year through 2015.

The Harvard Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity study says that retiring Baby Boomers are downsizing, selling homes they haven’t upgraded in decades. As younger buyers enter the market, they are eager to remodel. That huge Baby Boom generation is just beginning to retire and unload houses in massive numbers, many of them with remodeling deferred for years, says Henley.

The generational turnover of housing stock also drew the attention of Remodeling magazine last month. In a story titled “Move Over Boomers,” the magazine pointed out that Generation Y — which is even bigger than the baby boom generation — is snapping up homes and changing expectations for what a kitchen should offer. For instance, a quarter of Gen Y homeowners consider a place to feed a pet to be a desirable kitchen “extra,” and nearly half like to watch TV or use the computer in the kitchen. A watched pot never boils, so why not watch YouTube instead?

The story, based on Masco Cabinetry’s survey of 1,092 homeowners, references another fact that should be music to the ears of kitchen remodeling consultants like Kitchen Solvers: Sarah Reep, director of design relations and education at Masco Cabinetry, told Remodeling magazine that despite growing up shopping at big box stores, Gen-Y likes smaller companies that offer intimate service and can surprise them with amazing suggestions and unique solutions. Sound familiar?
